Law & Order Fixation
Dec 30th, 2005 by Alex
I think Dick Wolf and his cronies at TNT have it in for me.
Dick Wolf created Law & Order. I’m not a huge fan of the original series. I can take it or leave it. The successors are a different story. I’ve got a serious problem. I can’t figure out which series I prefer, and it’s causing me a headache due to lack of sleep.
I generally enjoy Special Victims Unit (SVU) more. With Stabler and Benson, how can you go wrong? There’s good screen chemistry — to use a cliche sort of phrase — between the two detectives. The cases are more gruesome. What’s not to like?
But then there’s Criminal Intent (CI). The only reason I watch this is because Goren — as a character — is so damned interesting. He’s quirky, gathers his thoughts, and the way he sneaks his way into the person’s head. It’s spooky and intriguing, even if it is scripted.
TNT shows a solid 4-5 hours of these shows, every night! As if I didn’t have anything better to be doing, like sleeping. The fact that they show CI, then SVU, then CI, then SVU… keeps me awake even longer continuing the search for my favorite.
As if that weren’t enough, TNT shows MARATHONS of the shows. As if a 5 hour block weren’t enough, they recently televised a 12-hour marathon of SVU. For the New Year’s weekend they’re planning on airing a TWO DAY marathon of SVU and CI. That’s just absurd. I’m scared to turn the TV on that day knowing that I’ll emerge from my home 48 hours later satisfied, unshaven and stinking.
I’m not much of a TV person. I generally watch movies instead, but these shows — if I sit down and start watching them — seem to take control. You can’t turn them off. I know there are others out there with the same problem, the same affliction.
I just want my life back.
