Using LinkedIn for Networking
Mar 21st, 2006 by Alex
LinkedIn fancies itself as a social networking site for managing relationships; similar to Orkut or MySpace, except targeting business professionals.
I joined LinkedIn about a month ago, on the recommendation of an RIT student. Only recently have I started pursuing more connections, finding old classmates, and working to complete my profile and network.
To be honest, I’m impressed.
I’ve found the LinkedIn interface to be quite functional and visually pleasing. The navigation is very fluid; not strict at all. The geek in me loves that you can click on just about everything and can get to various pages from different places without having to peruse a menu.
A few notes regarding the service:
- Email notifications and confirmations are very fast.
- I subscribed with a vanity forwarding address. Despite the perks of running my own mail server, I’ve yet to get any unsolicited email on the account.
- Pages load quickly, although I have noticed delays during the business day. I’ve yet to see any sort of page or database error, which are usually common for high-capacity sites.
I’m not sure if I’ll gain anything from using the site. At present I’ve got two dozen connections and a handful of endorsements. It’s been fun getting back in touch with former classmates and colleagues.
