BSD is Dying
Dec 4th, 2006 by Alex
I’m an avid user and fan of FreeBSD, despite despising the new space-like logo. The graphic to the right however, now that is progress. Anyways, I got quite a kick out of BSD is Dying: A Cautionary Tale of Sex and Greed as presented by Jason Dixon at the NYC BSD Conference at Columbia University on October 28, 2006.
I’m behind the times, as usual. The video was posted to Digg over a month ago. Recommended to me by a coworker, the eighteen minute brief goes over a brief history of BSD in a rather amusing fashion. If you aren’t into BSD or Linux geekery, you probably won’t find it all that entertaining. Sorry ladies (no offense, Kasia). If you’ve dabbled or are actively involved, you’ll get more than a few chuckles out of it.
You’ll learn that Tiger doesn’t really count due to its inbred nature, see a list of small companies that still use BSD in this age, and hear such lovely quotes as “I know the NetBSD guys are going to jump me. I can handle the two of you.” For these bits and more, better presented… watch the video.
And no, it really isn’t dying. That’s just a conspiracy, as this post’s tags indicate.
Hi Alex-
Thanks for the nice post.
