Cultural Norms Between Coworkers
Dec 17th, 2006 by Alex
At my company’s holiday party last night, the husband of a coworker asked his wife why she was hugging her coworkers that evening. He asked whether she hugged them at work or whether it was just because everyone was dressed to kill. I had just shaken his hand in greeting a mere five minutes prior and had thought nothing of it. After a brief conversation with all those immediately involved, we came to an agreeable hypothesis that hugs between ladies were warranted outside of work and that the sexy outfits had little to do with it. The same seems to hold true of men’s handshakes. This hypothesis was confirmed by evidence of hugging and hand shaking when meeting at a mall or private residence. Interesting stuff, cultural norms.
In other news, a high school student asked me if I got laid this weekend. I said no, then asked if he had. He said no. I wished him better luck next weekend. Not sure what I was supposed to say to that. Funny, those youngsters are.
