The Juxtaposition of Bumper Stickers
Jun 28th, 2007 by Alex
I don’t like putting stickers on my car. I don’t feel like I should be advertising my preferences on my windshield, if for no other reason than a police officer might not agree with my views when he’s considering whether to give a warning or write a ticket. My views might change, too… then I had to deal with removing the sticker.
The only things on my car are removable or required for some reason or another. I’ve got the name of my college in text across the rear window, probably a half-inch in height. It’s one of those stick-on plastic decals without glue. The rear vent windows (the little funky shaped ones that don’t open) have parking passes from said college on them. No way around that. The rear bumper has a two-inch square parking sticker from when I lived in Rosslyn Heights; they required it to be in that exact place, and it’s the only place where there’s adhesive of any sort attached to my car’s paint. Otherwise my car is pretty plain. Blends in. Doesn’t stand out. It’s a nice little luxury.
I stopped a red light on the way home from work. While I was waiting I stared at the car in front of me. I noticed that it was plastered with bumper stickers. More than I could count. All over the rear-facing portion of the trunk lid, back bumper, back window, etc. The juxtaposition of the largest items displayed was as follows.
What part of “thou shalt not kill” don’t you understand?
Yikes. That’s a pretty serious issue. Lots of people get upset at the mere mention of it, let alone a blunt accusation from a piece of plastic that may oppose your belief. Way too serious for a bumper in my mind. And then to the immediate right…
Support veterans and their families
Okay. People can bitch about the war (or whether it’s actually a war, mistake, whatever) but most don’t have it in for the troops that have to head out there. Less fault those (and their families) who return. Even less fault those (and their families) who don’t… And then the license plate frame…
God bless our troops
It was quite a sight. One that I’m going to think about more. Maybe that was the point.
