The Ginormous Office Project
Jun 30th, 2007 by Alex
My office is a disaster.
As you can see, I’ve got piles upon piles of paperwork, old bills, documentation from work, books, computer components. It’s all taking up space that I’d rather be able to offer up if I have guests spend the night or otherwise use for something other than long term storage.
Ugh.
When I moved to Arlington a few years ago I brought along several boxes from college. These boxes were packed with a shovel. I was in such a hurry I didn’t bother or care to categorize any of them. In retrospect I should have just dumped everything.
When I moved I brought the boxes along. And there they sit, years later. Every once in a while I need something that I think might be in one of them, so I go digging. Sometimes I have success. In any case, it’s a lot of stuff.
Various people have suggested that if I haven’t needed anything in a few years I should just throw the entire box away. I just can’t do it. Curiosity is getting the better of me and at this point I think it’d cause more of a problem to toss it all away. I’d always wonder what I had tossed. Even if there’s nothing worth saving, at least I’ll know.
My goal is to spend at least three hours per week going through all of it. I need to decide what to keep, what to toss, what to attempt to sell on Craigslist or at a yard sale. I also want a flipbook-style visual guide to the process, hence the photos.
It’s going to be quite the project.
[...] It’s actually been a month since I started my office cleaning project. It is only the second weekend that I’ve put any real time into it. It looked like it was going to be hot and humid out this afternoon so I decided to take another couple hours at it. I’m proud to say that the carpet is making a comeback. [...]
