July 4th is Messing Up My Chi
Jul 1st, 2007 by Alex
In years past Independence Day has been a day of grilling with friends and family, quasi-affixed to a long weekend. Lots of marinated foods, outdoor foolishness, laughter, and other assorted goodness. The fact that it’s on a Wednesday this year is jacking up my chi. I can’t justify taking two days off to make it a long weekend. Others will though, which will make it an unproductive workweek.
A quick digression and commentary on work-related issues.
Some employers won’t give you holiday leave if you take off the day before or after the holiday. I had never heard of this until yesterday and I think it sucks. I suppose it may help prevent empty offices on three day holiday weekends, but it’s still a crummy policy put into place by some bean counting HR person-without-a-soul. I bet employers that do this have a lot of people fall ill after the holiday.
“Uh, I can’t come in today. Food poisoning. My nephew was manning the grill. Undercooked chicken. You know how it is.”
Bummer. Guess no one will be in. Must have been bad chicken.
The whole work digression aside, no one has come up with any decent plans for the 4th. No big grill parties. No pool parties. Nada. Everyone I’ve talked to seems to be in the same boat or indifferent. Whatever happens, I plan to spend the day outside.
