Fools & Horses at Ram’s Head On Stage
Jul 15th, 2007 by Alex
I saw Fools & Horses at Ram’s Head On Stage yesterday afternoon. I’ve been to Ram’s Head Tavern many times before, but it was my first time at the dining room/concert venue. It’s nice. It has seating for 217 people and they offer table-size food/drink service to the 21+ crowd. Perfect for an intimate set, and unless you get the crappiest seats you’re sitting less than 30 feet from the stage. The stage is less than two feet off the ground, so the band is in good view from anywhere and now towering over you. The Gin Blossoms were playing later that night and I imagine that it would have been a good show. My seat was decent, but I didn’t sit for long.
I wanted a turkey burger.
My table’s waiter wouldn’t get me one. He pointed toward the dinky On Stage menu and said I’d have to order from that. Far from the full menu that the band and crew were ordering off from, it didn’t have anything appetizing. You can order their mini-cheeseburgers of the mini-menu and I fail to understand what about a turkey burger makes it so much different. Same grill, same approximate cook time.
I got up from my chair (nary to return), walked over to the sound booth and flagged down the server handling that area. He glady put in my original order. Lorenzo’s Turkey Burger, they called it. Ground turkey blended with minced vegetables and herbs. Good thing too, the burger was excellent. The seasoned fries and pickle weren’t too shabby either.
The set was excellent and the crowd — though more sober than the average show at the 8×10 Club — was very responsive, moreso than I’ve seen in a while going to Fools’ shows. They played several new songs, mostly about Steve’s romantic habits; somewhat beatdown-on-Steve-day, but musical and lyrical inspiration has to come from somewhere. I liked the first two but not the third; it was very Buffettesque, with a steel drum it would have worked out a bit better but it wasn’t what I’ve come to expect from them. Maybe that’s the point. It seemed out of place.
The custom IDS-Shoreline custom sub boxes sounded great. Good lows, without sounding punchy and cheap. Quite a bit lighter than their predecessors, too. I lended a hand with the load out before heading out to run errands and do some side work.
That’s funny. I was at Ram’s Head in Annapolis on Sat., too, but later and not in the concert venue area. I hadn’t been there for ages and I’ve actually never been there for a show, oddly. Have been to Rams Head Live, which is completely different, and I generally adore The 8×10. I’m not a big fan of Fools & Horses, though.
I’ll have to give Fools & Horses another listen. I didn’t see them at a very good “venue” - Towsontown Spring Festival in the drunks parking lot. I’ve heard of them for quite some time more than I’ve heard them. That’s really cool that you know them and can chronicle so many memories of their shows.
