Things I (Re-)Learned This Weekend
Aug 12th, 2007 by Alex
This weekend was quite full and very enjoyable. Past tense, because I intend to spend another couple hours in my office today. It’s supposed to be in the 90’s today and the comforts of central air are just too tempting. That and I feel like I’ve done enough this weekend to warrant just laying about, so it is the perfect time to take another crack at the cleanup efforts.
I learned a bunch of things this weekend. Some of these things I knew already but were reinforced in one way or another.
- Margaritas at Rivera’s are strong. Don’t get me wrong, they are really tasty but you definitely don’t notice the tequila until you’re halfway done and you realize your fingers are tingling. Their food is amazing too, so I decided to write a brief review (follow link above to the Google Maps “more information” entry and click on the “reviews” tab).
- My buddy’s Supra is quick. I’m not a big gear head but can appreciate the feeling in my gut; the acceleration of that car makes you feel like you’re on a roller coaster. Hearing the blowoff valve also makes you feel like you’re in The Fast and the Furious.
- Dogs like me. A lot. More than most people. I had a pit bull try to lick every square inch of my exposed couch-ensconced skin, just to give one example.
- Shooter was much better than my expectations, although the movie could have been renamed “Marky Mark Shoots a Lot of People” and I doubt anyone would mind (besides Mr. Wahlberg who I’m told isn’t a big fan of his pre-film beginnings in the entertainment industry). Lots of action all the way through. Believable or not, it was a fun one.
- With my living room full of sleeping house guests, the air conditioning runs most of the night and I sleep exceedingly well. Either that or its the summer sheets that I just put on yesterday. The guests will be on their way today and their heat-producing bodies won’t be sleeping in the same room as the thermostat, so tonight’s sleep should unravel that mystery.
- Breach didn’t live up to my expectations, lacking all the action that the previews had hinted at. Traitors are unique personalities compelled to act by various idealogical, financial, and emotional means; Chris Cooper should be commended for his portrayal of a very complicated Robert Hannsen. The movie did hint at the double life that some agents have to live and the strain that it can place on them and their families. I appreciated that, but it’s definitely more of a historical documentary than an action film.
- Firefox is amazing. As I was writing this the browser crashed. Crap. I hadn’t saved this entry yet. I know I know, save frequently and often. So I restarted Firefox. I had to wait a minute or two while it installed updates but then it asked me if I wanted to restore my sessions (because it had detected an unexpected shutdown). Hell yes I want to restore, I’m thinking. It launches all of my tabs and restores all of the text that I had been writing. How sweet is that?
It was mild out yesterday — and the high was only supposed to be in the mid-80’s — so I pestered my buddy to spend the early afternoon digging outside. We spent about 4 hours digging out a hole that will eventually be the gravel pit for his hot tub. The hole is done, some thirty two cubic feet of dirt later. It doesn’t sound like much, but it’s not trivial. Only six hours later did I feel a warmth emanating from my back, confirmation that I did get a bit too much sun during our manual labor. Still, I love working with my hands outdoors.
I’ll have to see Shooter. I do love Marky Mark. It’s amazing he turned out to be such a good actor given his start as a “rapper.” (What ever happened to the Funky Bunch?)
I saw Breach in the theater courtesy of a free pass from the Citypaper. I’m glad it was free, because I agree that it was pretty good, but definitely not an action movie, not even a psychological thriller, as it lacked the thrills. I did also like Chris Cooper’s performance, though.
danielle: He’s a much better actor then musical performer, that much is solid. According to the British tribute page, the group never formally split up. Wahlberg still has a recording contract despite his acting career, DJ T is still in the music business along with Ashey Ace. Not a word about Hector the Booty Inspector. Jail?
The Internet is awful. I never would have looked any of that up if it weren’t right here. *sigh*
Not a word about Hector the Booty Inspector, oh dear.
