Bars With Benefits for Designated Drivers

A close friend and I have always talked about opening a bar. We’ve got a name picked out and everything. I think everyone dreams about running their own place at least once, having conversations that start with the phrase “if I owned the bar…” and ending with some absurdly crazy thing they’d like to have. Like weekly wet t-shirt contests on top of the bar or beer pong tables out back. I know restaurants run on tight margins and that most lose money, but if we were opening a bar it wouldn’t be to make money. More like an expensive hobby and place to hang out. Retirement, baby.
I’d like to see a bar that provides sensible incentives for people to be designated drivers. Start by nixing the cover charge for designated drivers. Make money off the drunkards, not the nice folks that are taking one for the team and will be helping their intoxicated friends leave the establishment and get home alive. Give the drivers some incentive to stay there with their friends by offering free soda/water. The whole point is to have the designated driver be sober. When a beer costs $4 and a small watered down soda costs $3, there’s less incentive to remain sober. A different colored wristband would be all that it takes to get it all started. The wearer gets the free drinks but cannot be served alcohol regardless of age. I think this would be a solid financial investment; not only does it does enable those drunkards to live to drink another day, it offers incentives to keep them coming back week after week.
Smart idea on the incentives for designated drivers. They actually do that at Camden Yards for O’s games. You go to a certain booth within the 1st or 2nd inning and sign up as DD. Then, you get two free sodas, which at an O’s game is like $8 worth. It’s nice that they do this, but it’s not as crucial since you can bring your own food/beverage in to Camden Yards.
