Avoiding Cigarette Smoke
Dec 3rd, 2007 by Alex
I don’t really care if people smoke or not, but it does irritate me to come home after a night out and have to throw my clothes outside or start a load of laundry immediately to prevent the house from smelling like stale cigarette smoke. Not to the point of not going out, but enough to want to find more places that are smoke free.
Just as its a personal preference to smoke, it’s my personal preference to avoid patronizing smoking establishments. I wasn’t completely satisfied with the list of smoke free restaurants and bars on Smoke Free Word, so I decided to roll my own list.

I spend a lot of time in Columbia where all restaurants and bars are already smoke free, so I don’t really have to think about it most of the time. It has happily become the norm for me until I venture out farther from home. There are a lot of places outside Howard County that I think are smoke free, but that I’m not completely sure about. This just means I have an excuse to visit some of my favorites again. Score! Specifically on my list of places to check on include a few LEDO Pizza locations, the Olive Grove, the Japanese hibachi place in Park Plaza, El Salto in Brooklyn Park, and a few others. I don’t think any of the bars or restaurants in DTA are smoke-free, at least none that I’ve been to recently. I’ve already decided to exclude some of favorites (such as Jeno’s Steaks) not because their fare isn’t excellent, but because they cater to take-out and don’t have any seating.
The list is now prominently linked at the top of most of my blog pages. Until business owners are forced to go smoke free in 2011, I’m open to suggestions regardless of location.
all Baltimore city bars & restaurants will be smoke-free as of the end of next January…
When you go to the Olive Grove, give us a buzz. It’s just up the street from us, we’re there all the time. Which, of course, means I ought to know whether it’s smoke-free or not, but I don’t — the restaurant part is, I know, but I don’t know if the bar is or not, since we’re always seated in the back part of the place.
Jeno’s Steaks!! YUM!! My friend is the owner!
He’s an awesome guy, and always dresses to kill - which makes me wonder - why dress so sexy-fied when your flippin’ cheesesteaks into sub rolls? Well because, you gotta look fly at all times, of course.
And yes, I am trying to find a job that pays well and doesn’t have a strict dress code. I totally agree with you on the comfort thing. I think it is completely linked to the productivity. I know I’d work a lot more happier and faster in jeans and a t-shirt than heels and a pencil skirt.
jwer: Oh believe you me, I know. I can’t wait.
jamaila: Do you smell like smoke when you leave? That’s the pivotal factor for me. I do enjoy the place, that’s for sure. I’ll give you a buzz the next time I’m headed thataway.
The Brave: Small world, isn’t it? I’ve never been introduced to the owner, but I’m pretty sure I know who you’re talking about. He’s made several subs for me in the past year.
My criteria are a little stricter than yours. My mom is violently allergic to cigarette smoke, so there has to be WAY less than enough to make you smell like smoke — even a whiff and she’s getting sick. And we’ve taken my mom to the Olive Grove, so it’s definitely a place you can safely consider smoke-free according to your definition.
