Displaying Ads Within the Feed Itself
Apr 7th, 2008 by Alex
I was meddling with FeedBurner settings early today — researching something for a customer — and wasn’t able to tell how the FeedBurner Ad Network and/or Google AdSense for Content actually appears in the feed body. Based on their advertising specs I know they’re in the feeds, but it wasn’t horribly clear from the documentation how it would look. The only link I found to a screenshot of the ads resulted in a 404 error.
I don’t intend to run ads on the feeds, but I’ve enabled them to see where the heck they appear. If you see one, I’d appreciate a head’s up and/or a screenshot.
I have a blog (this one) with Adsense, but I had no idea you get the ads into the feed. I may have to play with it.
I do believe (if the gawker network is any indication) that they actually appear as posts in the feed.
Wonkette uses a service called “Pheedo” (IIRC) and their RSS gets peppered with “posts” inserted. Fortunately they’re prominently labelled as [SPONSORED], etc.
yellowjkt: I’ve had AdSense for a while, but only for folks that don’t comment. Once you comment, the banner simply disappears. From a money-making perspective, it doesn’t really make sense since those commenting visit for frequently, but I like the idea of thanking people for contributing (by not subjecting them).
mokiejovis: If that’s the case I’ll be dumping them, but so far I haven’t seen squat. Guess I need to post first.
