Chili Dogs as Comfort Food
Jul 9th, 2008 by Alex
When I’ve had a frustrating day at the office, I don’t usually feel like cooking anything extravagant. Nothing that’s going to require a lot of time in the kitchen or requires me to head out to the grocery store. Good food that you enjoy is a must for comfort.
I like chili dogs.
Most people I talk to don’t. I’m not sure why. They do hot dogs. They do chili. They do cheese. They’ll even do chili and cheese. But not combined. Whenever I offer to make them when the grill is fired up, I rarely get any takers. Oh well, more for me.
Not that there’s a single homemade item here, but here’s the “recipe” for some quick and easy chili dogs.
- 2 Esskay beef franks
- 2 enriched flour rolls
- 1 15oz can of Hormel Chili
- 2 slices of American cheese
You can obviously substitute whatever hot dogs you like. I happened to have the Turkey with Beans variety of Hormel on the shelf, so I used that. It’s not the greatest tasting chili (compared to homemade) or particular healthy, but then this meal isn’t exactly about that. The same goes with the rolls; I enjoy potato rolls but find them too heavy for some meals, sometimes detracting from what you put in them.
Throw the hot dogs in a pot of water and bring to a boil. While that’s happening, fold/break/cut the pieces of cheese in half. Lay each set of halved cheese out within a roll. Heat up the chili in the microwave. When the water is boiling, throw a frank in each roll atop the cheese, then apply a liberal amount of chili over everything.
These things were quick and easy, messy, and scrumptious. They made me feel a little more like me. Perfect.
I love chili dogs! Now I really want some!
Ah ha! I just knew that I wasn’t the only one.
