Bits and Pieces

I’m remiss for not posting earlier, but there’s a winner to the latest caption contest. Paul won a pair of song downloads from iTunes for his super-sweet-like-a-ninja caption.
There are fourteen ninjas in this picture enjoying a keg party.
Had someone written a caption referencing pirates there would have to have been a death match or brownie-making competition to determine the winner, but there wasn’t. Maybe next time.
If you’re an REI customer and didn’t get an email, you can get 25% off selected items until July 24th by using the coupon code THNX2U8 (”thanks to you?”), either at their website or local stores.
I got to experience Artscape for the first time this weekend, eating chicken ka-bobs and watching Mike Doughty play on the Saturn Stage. I got some good audio and decent video — if not a tad blurry — of him singing Looking at the World from the Bottom of a Well (also embedded below).
I realize that it’s only one tiny part of the monstrous three day event, but the vibe throughout was such a positive one. The festival is free to all, which is amazing to start. The performance lineup was incredible, such that you’d have problems deciding where to be. Vendors weren’t gouging the attendees, selling really good food for reasonable prices (one dish easily fed two people) and having inexpensive beer and water. I’m not a big shopper, but there are dozens (if not hundreds) of artists and vendors selling all sorts of neat things. From the little that I saw, I really liked the festival and look forward to returning next year, hopefully when it isn’t so hot.
Some friends were in town for a wedding this weekend, so we headed to Bateman’s to meet them for lunch yesterday. They had recently moved to Philadelphia and lately our paths haven’t crossed when they were in town, so it was nice to catch up on the news of their jobs, house hunting, and exploring the city. I also took the opportunity to try a new entree: the Southwestern Chicken wrap. I like their southwestern spring rolls as an appetizer but rarely order them due to the cost, so I figured this would be good too. It was and I’d definitely recommend it. A nice mix of beans, chicken, and cheese. The cheese had a kick to it that left me sweating a little bit. The fries were perfect, ever so crispy on the outside and potatoey on the inside.
We continued the reunion over ice water and munchies at the pool. The water may have been lukewarm, but it felt incredible in the 95°+ heat. I think it’s the first time I’ve been in a pool this season. Very weird, considering I spent the bulk of my childhood summers in the water.
Brownie making competition? I could do a heckuv a job with that.
If you go to Bateman’s you have to get wings or the one-pound burger. Get with the program.
Paul: Bring it on, I’ll happily judge anything that gets sent my way.
yellojkt: I don’t eat wings, but I do enjoy their half-price burger specials (though they don’t apply to the 1 pound burger). For big-ass burgers, I like Cheeburger Cheeburger and Fuddrucker’s.
