Some Brief Words on Eagle Eye
Sep 27th, 2008 by Alex
The plan was to see Righteous Kill with the lads last night. I’ve been looking forward to seeing DeNiro and Pacino together again on the screen for the first time since Heat. But it wasn’t to be, the 7:20 time that we were planning on came and went while we were busy bantering about current events over a few pints of Twisted Kilt.
We weren’t willing to wait for the 9:55, so we saw Eagle Eye instead. The early reviews said not to bother, but I was entertained. There was a twist that the previews don’t let you in on, which I liked. It’s a steadicam-lacking action flick with unbelievability galore, with some themes that smack of War Games and I, Robot. I’m not sure why everyone thinks that Shia LaBeouf is the poo, but he performed as well as the script could allow. The same goes for Michelle Monaghan and Billy Bob Thornton. Lots of other familiar faces that didn’t get to contribute as much as I would have liked. It’s a bigger than life movie that you could easily wait to see at home; if you do see it at the theater make sure you hit the bathrooms before, because there’s not a slow moment until the very very end.
In what could only be considered inevitable, the student rate at Muvico has been raised to $8.50 (full price is $10). According to my roommate (who saw the same movie last night, coincidentally) the same rate is $6.50 at Hoyt’s. I think I’m going to start heading there, even though it means I’ll have to find some great restaurants nearby. It isn’t just the price: parking is usually horrible and Muvico tends to show the movies way too loud. Definitely an opportunity to head back to the Olive Grove.
And you could also visit the wonderful Charles Theatre where regular admission is the relatively low $6 Matinees (all shows before 6pm) and $8 Evenings.
And to see your favorite Halethorpites! Halethorpians? I don’t know. There’s a new restaurant in the Westin over there called Luminous — it’s supposed to be asian fusion and the menu looks pretty good. I haven’t dragged Don out to try it yet. Other than that it’s still pretty bare up here, barring Ruby Tuesday’s and Bob Evans if you can stand ‘em.
danielle: Excellent point, plus there’s many options for good eats up thataway.
jamaila: True, plus I hear there’s a new sub shop nearby that’s worth trying out. Luminous looks good for an independent, but also somewhat expensive. Moreso than P.F. Chang’s.
