Two Movies in Six Days

Last Saturday night I saw Knowing. That movie with Nicholas Cage, the kid, and the numbers of all the disasters? The concept sounded cool. I wanted to know where they would take it. Visually, it’s stunning. The effects — especially the disasters — are top-notch. The movie is a lot more suspenseful than I expected, such that it’d probably give kids a nightmare or two. It had a different spin than Alex Proyas usual directorial business. And then there is a plot twist that leaves you — and the rest of the people in the theater — thinking “really, are you kidding me? They went there?” That thought stays with you after the credits roll and most of the drive home.
In short, I’d skip it.
Last night I saw Fast & Furious. I went in expecting a lot of souped up cars racing around causing much havoc and destruction. I wasn’t disappointed, neither were the dozens of low-riding racers flying out of the parking lot afterward. Chronologically, this one picks up after the second but before the third. My expectations aren’t horribly high when it comes to action movies, but aside from the cars and the driving, I thought the second and third movie were painstakingly forced. Neither Paul Walker or Lucas Black do so well by themselves, laying the dialogue on more thick than necessary. With the return of the bulk of the original cast (and perhaps being produced by Vin Diesel), this installment felt a lot more natural.
Definitely fun, I might even pick it up on DVD when it comes out.
