Old-School Evening Entertainment
Jun 7th, 2009 by Alex
I’ve been borrowing a lot of movies lately. One of them has shiny things, old-school computers, horrendously trendy but period synthesized music, Paul Reubens, a 21-year old Sarah Jessica Parker, and a child lead who hasn’t been seen in years. The dubbing is fair, but it’s a classic. Flight of the Navigator embodies a kind of family entertainment that I remember fondly.
It wasn’t just the movies themselves.
I remember when family-oriented movies would be broadcast at reasonable times or a Friday or Saturday night. One option was called Disney Night at the Movies or something similar. Michael Eisner would come on and say a few words about the movie. Nothing spoiling, just introductory. We’d make popcorn (even before the microwave) during one of the commercial breaks. I remember it fondly and it retrospect it’s probably one reason why I enjoy movies so much.
Aside from kid-friend cable channels I wonder if there’s something similar these days.
You’re in luck. Turner Classic Movies has a Sunday night program that runs in the summertime which is geared toward acquainting younger viewers with some of the great old films. The promos are running already so it should be starting up again in the next couple of weeks.
Claude: I think this is Essentials, Jr. hosted by John Lithgow. Sunday nights at 8pm. Is that it?
That would indeed be the program.
