Cleaning Out the Closet
Jul 5th, 2009 by Alex
Lately I’ve been feeling like cleaning out the house. Getting rid of a lot of the crap that I hold onto needlessly. I’m a pack rat. It’s a tough process for me. This morning I woke up with an urge to clean out my closet. I just knew that there were clothes in there that I hadn’t worn in years. Just taking up space. Some of them might not even fit and like the professional organizers would say, if you haven’t worn it in a year you probably aren’t going to.
I started front and center and worked my way to the back, where the less-worn tends to migrate. Ignoring all of the t-shirts I’ve received for working various shows and performances, I didn’t find much that I was holding onto for sentimental reasons. The end result was a lot more closet space. I don’t intend to fill it up, but it gives me more room for things to spread out. It’s easier on the eyes too.
I’ve got a nice pile of shirts and pants to be donated to Goodwill. Somewhere in storage I have a box of clothes that I tried to sell a few years back. The same for a box of books, before I learned about The Book Thing. They’ll go to their respective homes, too.
Amidst a few pairs of khaki pants and lots of shirts from what must-have-been high school, I discovered that I had some nice things that I’ve been neglecting. That fit. That I still like. These discoveries have inspired me to put some of them back in rotation. After a run through the washer, of course.
I didn’t get the memo this past spring, but I feel like I reaped unexpected benefits this morning.
