Observation #11 - Perhaps It’s The Location
Jul 21st, 2009 by Alex
The Loft was a barn-shaped bar with a liquor store underneath. The place was notable for having free pool on various weeknights, at least one broken window that went unrepaired for years (letting cool and smoke-free air in during the winter), and having the largest digital jukebox I’ve ever seen. Business didn’t ever appear to be good. Instead of using a back room, unopened liquor was locked up in outdoor-style Tupperware containers behind the bar, such that you’d store your pool towels in. After losing enough money or without desire to make necessary upgrades to draw more business, the owner finally threw in the towel.
They razed the barn and put in a Commerce Bank (clearly seen in Google Street View).
After a brief period of time, it was converted into a TD Bank.
Ironic, that a failing business was replaced by banks in a period of time that banks themselves were failing.
I remember that place. Back in 2006 it was _always_ busy it seemed. Then again, I haven’t driven past it in years so I have no idea how it was doing recently. I used to live within a mile or two of it.
In all the time I’ve spent in the area, I never knew that that place had a bar above the liquor store. I’m so bummed that I never had the chance to appreciate a good dive bar with a view of Target across the street!
Steven: Agreed, there were always people in there… but it wasn’t being kept up too well. There’s a fine line between a dive and a dying business.
Damien: I got a chuckle out of that. Kidding aside, the windows were dirty enough that you couldn’t have seen anything but the glow from the Target sign.
