Ever heard of weekday vegetarianism?
I hadn’t, but it’s a neat concept. Especially for those folks who like the health aspects of a vegetarian lifestyle put can’t start to think about giving up meat. I know I like my bacon extra crispy.
This four minute video lays it all our without being too preachy.

The South Street Challenge is a gastronomic wonder that has to be experienced to be fully understood. A favorite of drunken Philadelphians and visitors from New Jersey alike, it combines two late night staples: steak from Jim’s Steaks and pizza from Lorenzo and Sons.
Last weekend when we were up visiting friends, we attempted the [...]

Quite a bit of heavy reading this week, mostly pertaining to cryptography. More interesting (and a lot more accessible), there’s slick little Flash video showing how Simple Power Analysis (SPA) can conceivably reveal the bits of a cryptographic key as they’re being processed on-chip. Inexpensive and quite scary, assuming you have physical access. Sadly, there’s [...]

A full face motorcycle helmet is a magical thing. Sure, it protects your head, but it also makes you sound like a fighter pilot. The next time you ride, try reciting some lines from Top Gun. It’s not like anyone can see or hear you.

Walking down Lombard Street towards 7th, we heard a woman yelling. Raving mad. We turned and saw no one. A few seconds later a car rolls down the street, the driver screaming her head off. She’s turned slightly towards her passenger; he is slumped down in the seat looking dejected, not even attempting to get [...]

A video for the teachers I know, but for the rest of us too.
If the embedding doesn’t work, the link above should.
Today’s math curriculum is teaching students to expect — and excel at — paint-by-numbers classwork, robbing kids of a skill more important than solving problems: formulating them. At TEDxNYED, Dan Meyer shows classroom-tested math [...]

On the drive back from Shenandoah National Park, it was discovered that the following two items both contain propylene glycol:
ice cream sandwich
Degree antiperspirant and deodorant
Despite the fact propylene glycol is found in many foods, this seemed a little weird.
It reminded me of an issue of Zillions — a version of Consumer Reports intended for kids [...]

Vixie cron supports jitter, an extremely easy way to stagger cron jobs and prevent them all from starting at once. From the FreeBSD cron man page:

When a social media magnate needs cash, how do you go about it? Historically, options have been limited. You can sell advertising space in the form of banners or buttons. You can sell aggregate data about your users activities to marketers. You can hold a bake sale. Or you can sell off a chunk of [...]

Art Attack XXVII was yesterday at University of Maryland College Park.
This is the fourth year that I’ve been involved in this production in some form or another. While I keep busy during the load-in, sound checks, in between bands, and load-out, during the sets themselves I get to sit back and enjoy. Except for a [...]
