Denim as the Magic Material

Denim jeans are rugged, comfortable, versatile, easy to care for, and quite possible the greatest clothing ever.
Under typical conditions, a pair of jeans will last for years. They offer good protection against the elements and seem to be able to take harsh environments just as well, be it a construction site, muddy field, or snow-filled parking lot. You can even inflate denim jeans to use as a flotation device.
Few articles of clothing are as comfortable as a pair of jeans. No one seems to mind that they don’t feel best until the second or third time wearing them. More importantly, we develop an attachment to our jeans. There are few things as comforting as slipping into your favorite pair. I feel a sense of loss when I’ve got to retire a pair because the holes in the knees are just too large for day-to-day wear.
Jeans are best for lounging around or working hard, but they’re easily adapted into more dressy circumstances. With a nice black belt, a collared shirt and tie, and a sport coat you’re more than casual but more comfortable than business casual. Upgrade to a pair of shined shoes for more effect. There aren’t many clothes out there that have such a wide range of dressiness.
They’re easy to clean. Warm water. Cold water. It doesn’t matter. Most stains come out easily and if not they just add to the character.
My employer doesn’t really have a dress code. It’s more important that we blend in wherever we are. If you’re attending board meetings, wear a suit. At a picnic, shorts and t-shirt. If visiting a customer, wear whatever helps you blend in. I consider this to be a huge benefit.
I get to wear jeans to work most every day.

It’s even sweeter when you wear denim on top and on the bottom. That is a look I could get into.
I think the key to a good pair of jeans is to buy a pair that is “dressy” and then retire them to rugged use when they get too worn. At that point, they still have plenty of life in them.
