Ultimate Grilled Cheese Sandwich at DuClaw

I have mixed feelings about big chain restaurants. While I certainly patronize my fair share, I try to highlight the little guys, Mom and Pop, and hole in the wall places that frequently go overlooked. But sometimes you’ve got to give credit to a fantastic sandwich.
May I present the Ultimate Grilled Cheese Sandwich ($9.29) from DuClaw Brewing Company. Their menu describes the sandwich as such:
Mozzarella and asiago cheeses, prosciutto ham, sliced tomato, fresh basil and red pepper flakes served on sourdough bread and pressed in our panini grill for a twisted take on a childhood classic.
I’m not sure about twisted, but this was one heck of a good grilled cheese. There was nothing in the sandwich that wasn’t working well together, but the fresh basil really made the thing stand out.
Two thumbs up, albeit rather greasy.

I wouldn’t call DuClaw a “big chain restaurant”… they’ve got four locations (was five, Inner Harbor went under, and does BWI count?). And this year they’ve begun shipping their beer in six-packs to stores… they’re definitely growing.
Their beer is awesome and a little-known fact is that you can rent kegs from them; they are very helpful about that. The food is usually about what I expect from the big chains like TGIFriday’s.
There’s an only-grilled-cheese restaurant that just opened up here in Eldersburg you may want to check out sometime if that’s your thing. http://www.ilovegrilledcheese.com/locations/
I will forever miss that sandwich, it truly was the reason (other then the beer) I spent so much time in a declaws, that and the mozzarella moons
