Quite a bit of heavy reading this week, mostly pertaining to cryptography. More interesting (and a lot more accessible), there’s slick little Flash video showing how Simple Power Analysis (SPA) can conceivably reveal the bits of a cryptographic key as they’re being processed on-chip. Inexpensive and quite scary, assuming you have physical access. Sadly, there’s [...]

About a month and a half ago I wrote a fairly cryptic post about life changes. It was intended to be vague, but not that ominous. More than a few people perked up and offered their opinions and guessed about what it might be.
It had nothing to do with my (or anyone else’s) pregnancy, although [...]

Art Attack XXVII was yesterday at University of Maryland College Park.
This is the fourth year that I’ve been involved in this production in some form or another. While I keep busy during the load-in, sound checks, in between bands, and load-out, during the sets themselves I get to sit back and enjoy. Except for a [...]

RIT has been on a quarter calendar for a long time. Each quarter consists of 10 weeks. Distribution of the syllabus’ are during week one, midterms at week five, with exams at the end. Simple. That’s all going to change in the Fall of 2013.
In a February 10th letter to all RIT faculty, staff, students, [...]

A bandwidth-intense peek at the last few days.
Though not pictured, the weekend got off to a nice start at a happy hour organized by a coworker. You simply can’t go wrong with a margarita on the rocks, a plate of fried pickles, and reuniting with some folks you haven’t seen in a while (and meeting [...]

When I went up to Rochester for a wedding in October I didn’t make it to Nick Tahous, but I had been planning to make garbage plates at home for a long time. Today was the day. Behold, my attempt at a cheeseburger garbage plate inspired by the original. For those unfamiliar, it’s a delicious [...]

I lent a hand yesterday at the Art Attack XXV at University of Maryland College Park. This year the show was part of MTV’s Campus Invasion 2008 tour, which no doubt brought a handful of larger acts to the show: Wyclef Jean, The Bravery, Simple Plan, Cobra Starship, The Spill Canvas, as well as local [...]

This past weekend I worked Movin’ On 2008 at Penn State University. On Friday morning a small crew loaded two trucks full of audio and lighting gear just south of Baltimore and took off towards State College. We arrived without issue and got to work unloading the gear and loading in for the all day [...]

Amidst the Pennysaver and the usual junk mail, a few musings inspired by the contents of the mail bag this week.
From the Office of the President at my alma mater. “I hope you are enjoying the attractive address labels I sent you a few weeks ago.” Oh you know I’m enjoying them. Sticking them all [...]

Went down to a beach on the Magothy River to do some slacklining on Saturday afternoon. I setup a 30 foot line between two trees with a blanket below the center point but lacked the coordination to stay up for any period of time. I set up another line between two trees about 15 feet [...]

There is an interesting article on Gene Expression about Intercourse and Intelligence (featured on Slashdot today). Many of the comments were from an NIH paper entitled Smart Teens Don’t Have Sex (or Kiss Much Either). You can read the documents yourself but here’s a few things that stood out to me.
“By the age of 19, [...]

When I was in college, we made progressive screwdrivers on two occasions. Made with vodka — frozen by liquid nitrogen (LN2) — and orange juice, the drink gets progressively stronger as the vodka melts. The concept is quite simple, easy to execute, and it’s just plain cool. The safety requirements in handling LN2 do make [...]

All American Rejects played at UMD’s Art Attack 2007 this past Friday evening. I was there all day lending a hand where I could, providing the 2-3 minute spotlight training to some volunteers, cabling the truss incorrectly, and generally enjoying the warm weather otherwise. Overall it was a really good time without too many noticeably [...]

I rode up to Penn State (PSU) this weekend to support Movin’ On. Held on the HUB lawn, the PSU concert series is in its 33rd year and has attacted plenty of solid national acts in the past. I thought it was strange that I’d never heard of any of this year’s bands beforehand, nor [...]
