Dave & Buster’s Drink Debacle

I attended a business meeting at Dave and Buster’s yesterday. They have decent buffet food and private facilities large enough to do it, but there was one complaint that I heard repeatedly. The soda was flat. I heard this from several people after several trips to the drink station, where you’d think they’d be refilling [...]

Listening to the soundtrack from Garden State, grooving to Thievery Corporation. That obviously doesn’t suck, but it certainly helps insulate me from the following.
My hot water heater is leaking water and might be on its last legs. The base shows signs of rust and the concrete below has signs of calcium build-up from water that [...]

I Just Want to Live Here

The HOA drives me nuts. When they came through to inspect they suggested that I check for rot on the garage door. I did. No rot. A few weeks later I got an irrational nasty-gram from the HOA about the state of my place, saying that I hadn’t taken action and that if I didn’t [...]

I was in Atlantic City for a portion of the weekend, taking a much needed break from reality. Twelve of us ate out at The Trinity Pub and Carvery, located on The Pier at Caesars.
Don’t bother.
We had a reservation for twelve. They seated us at two tables pushed together in an L arrangement. This is [...]

I the course of four hours I got hammered with backscatter from someone’s spam run. It looks like the batch included a lot of the recent PDF spam that is circulating. The mail server handled it pretty well, but I still had to clean out the 1,600 bounce emails this afternoon. If I weren’t insistent [...]

Nobody Reads ANYTHING Anymore

Remember when you asked a question and got an answer to that question? I can’t remember when it last was, but I miss those days. People don’t take the time to read anymore. Not with any care anyways. Skimming is the trend now, whether you talking about letters, articles, newspapers, email, or text messages. People [...]

By the time you write enough Java code to be considered for the self-imposed “developer” title, you shouldn’t try to write shell scripts anymore. Do you system administrator and network engineers a huge favor and :q! now.
There are times when I get the impression that people don’t know what the hell they’re doing. I may [...]

Here is a rough copy of the American Community Survey questionnaire. I wasn’t able to locate a scanner, but I’m a quick typist. The only thing you’d gain from a scan is the design of the survey, which honestly isn’t too difficult to follow. I can confirm that there are no choices for you to [...]

In years past Independence Day has been a day of grilling with friends and family, quasi-affixed to a long weekend. Lots of marinated foods, outdoor foolishness, laughter, and other assorted goodness. The fact that it’s on a Wednesday this year is jacking up my chi. I can’t justify taking two days off to make it [...]

So I was bitching this morning about 1&1 refusing email from my mailserver. One of my subscribers complained to 1&1 technical support and got a tech named Jiggy to remove me from their blacklists. Amazing, but with amusing responses from technical support.

In the past two weeks 1&1 Internet has stopped accepting mail from my mailserver. I get the following error whenever I send an email to them or one of their customers: “421 mails from 71.127.149.126 refused: local dynamic IP address 71.127.149.126″
Now I utilize greylisting so I’m familiar with sending the user a 450; essentially [...]

RIP Mr. Wizard

Don Herbert — known to the world as “Mr. Wizard” — died today. Poor guy had bone cancer. He was 89.
I remember watching the show on Nickelodeon in awe, long before Bill Nye’s funky routine hit the screen. Hell, Bill Nye probably grew up watching Mr. Wizard too. I didn’t know this, but “when Late [...]

I hate crossing the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, especially when there’s no other way to go. I was heading to Alexandria last night and got to sit in the mixing bowl for 20-30 minutes before crossing into Virginia. Took 20 minutes to go 25 miles on the Parkway and another hour in stop-and-go traffic for 3 [...]

As much as I like my place, I hate the HOA and its inspection process. The inspections are performed by representatives with no construction or repair experience. They cite problems then follow up with an inspection so cursory they won’t be able to tell whether repairs were made or not. When questioned in person they [...]

Comcast has been irritating me lately with their lack of support and continuous price increases. After numerous complaints and their failure to fix problems I’ve decided to take my business elsewhere. I don’t watch a lot of television and have been watching fewer movies on HBO and Showtime, so I decided to dump the television [...]
