I’m not the most politically savvy individual. I try to avoid political discussions. I’m not educated on all the issues surrounding this country and the world. In many cases I don’t even know enough to form an opinion, let alone converse intelligently. But I am a citizen of the United States. I vote. I pay [...]

Ever heard of weekday vegetarianism?
I hadn’t, but it’s a neat concept. Especially for those folks who like the health aspects of a vegetarian lifestyle put can’t start to think about giving up meat. I know I like my bacon extra crispy.
This four minute video lays it all our without being too preachy.
Naturally, there’s a blog [...]

The South Street Challenge is a gastronomic wonder that has to be experienced to be fully understood. A favorite of drunken Philadelphians and visitors from New Jersey alike, it combines two late night staples: steak from Jim’s Steaks and pizza from Lorenzo and Sons.
Last weekend when we were up visiting friends, we attempted the [...]

If you don’t eat meat, you might want to skip this one.
Over the past week, my coworkers and I made four treks to BBQ Dave’s for lunch. We ate a lot of meat, so much that I didn’t need much dinner. It would have been five days, but the rain started up on Friday. Dave’s [...]

The night air of Philadelphia was brisk, but walking down South Street it felt unseasonably warm. Jacket unzipped, we were on a mission for pizza and cheese steaks. Approaching 4th Street, the smell emanating from the grease exhaust fans outside Jim’s Steaks was heavenly. Unfortunately the line was well out the door and almost into [...]

I went to Victoria Gastro Pub for lunch today with some coworkers. While a tad too fancy for my day-to-day tastes, I liked it. The food was flavorful and filling. Servers dressed in black, providing excellent table service.
After eating at Hot Doug’s in Chicago, I was ready to try a Bucket of the Duck Fat [...]

Corky’s Smoke Shack opened last week, probably to the worst weather Maryland has seen in a decade. That normally wouldn’t matter, except that the Shack is located outside. But even that doesn’t seem to matter. According to the owners, there’s been a steady stream of customers since opening day. Even on an overcast Thursday afternoon, [...]

I finally made it out to Coal Fire this week, a pizzeria where “charred to perfection” is their motto. Sure enough, they live up to it; their coal-fired oven produces a very thin crust with a crisp bottom and a charred top. It’s enjoyable but I didn’t notice any change in flavor. Should I have? [...]

No thanks to the search engines, it’s clear that I use the word “behold” frequently. So this time, I won’t.
Here it is, then.
In the midst of sampling spicy Chinese takeout, I saw that China Express had a Bourbon Chicken on the menu. Being a fan of bourbon and chicken individually, I figured I’d give it [...]

I had heard about House of India before. Good things, mostly. The word of mouth sort. I had read a favorabe review by a blogger whose tastes tend to resonate with mine. According to their web site, Shyam Prakash — the chef there — even had the privilege of cooking spicy lamb vindaloo for President [...]

This weekend’s snowfall gave me plenty of time to relax.
I’ve been enjoying First Stint, a free 22 track album released by Ben Youngs. Well-composed soundscapes dominate the album, with a few remixes thrown in for variety. A few remixed Fools & Horses tracks are included, as is a really addictive track by Kaitlin Sweeney.
The last [...]

Behold, the $5 BQ Sandwick from Hideaways. And yes, it’s spelled that way.
There was definitely shredded pork. And a BBQ flavor. But it had a tomatoey hot dog sort of flavor to it too. Looking at the hi-res, it might even have chunks of hot dog in it. To be honest, I have no idea [...]

A group of my friends were in town for Thanksgiving, so we all went out to dinner at Pad Thai last night. The restaurant is located on West Street in Annapolis, just across the street from Stan & Joe’s Saloon and a brief walk from Rams Head Tavern. Warm and inviting, Pad Thai is filled [...]

You’ll find fresh appetizers, good food and decent service at Los Portales, across Aviation Boulevard from the BWI airfield. I would eat there again, but only if I were in the area. If I were catching a movie at Hoyt’s or taking someone to/from the airport. The margaritas — supposedly the best in the area [...]

After playing host to a truck driving school for a few months, the former Utopia club is now home to Bank Shot Bar & Grill. Make no mistake, it’s a pool hall that happens to contain a bar and a grill. Weekends and tournament nights the place is packed the rafters. You’ll find the parking [...]
