Rediscovering Juno Reactor

You’ve heard Juno Reactor, you just don’t realize it.
I first heard them in college, mostly the early goa-inspired mixes. I say “they” because Juno Reactor is the child of Ben Watkins, with a constantly changing set of musicians and accompanying artists. The albums or live shows wouldn’t be possible without the supporting folks, but I [...]

Art Attack 2008 at College Park

I lent a hand yesterday at the Art Attack XXV at University of Maryland College Park. This year the show was part of MTV’s Campus Invasion 2008 tour, which no doubt brought a handful of larger acts to the show: Wyclef Jean, The Bravery, Simple Plan, Cobra Starship, The Spill Canvas, as well as local [...]

It Rained a Lot at Movin’ On 2008

This past weekend I worked Movin’ On 2008 at Penn State University. On Friday morning a small crew loaded two trucks full of audio and lighting gear just south of Baltimore and took off towards State College. We arrived without issue and got to work unloading the gear and loading in for the all day [...]

A Lot of Cellos in a Cold Room

I worked a quattrocelli concert the other night. It’s a four-piece cello quartet based out of Germany. Cellists — and most other artists who play while seated — are picky about their seating, particularly the height of the seats. Not having numerous adjustable piano benches, we managed to strap several stacked chairs together with gaff [...]

Six RNR shows were completely sold out this year. An extra was added due to popular demand. No tickets being sold in advance for the extra show, it only took a few hours for 600+ to be sold. Two months worth of stage and set preparations, mostly torn out in a twelve hours over three [...]

I downloaded Ghosts I this evening and gave it a listen. I also listened to some of the tracks on the site itself (click “Listen”). Completely instrumental, I like the assortment. It doesn’t have the polish of Reznor’s typical studio album that you can only assume was the product of months in the studio mixing [...]

Analyse

The song playing through the credits of The Prestige caught my attention. Though I’m not sure whether I prefer this acoustic or the album version, Thom Yorke writes and performs eerily depressing yet beautiful music.

I can’t quite grasp why this reminded me of Exhibit 13.

These Lights are Really Blue

A few of us did a holiday potluck today at the office. I brought two crock pots, one with mulled cider and the other filled with half-ounce meatballs and marinara sauce (for subs). Other dishes present included Carnegie salad, cheesy corn, broccoli and rice casserole, a chocolate yule log, green bean casserole, buffalo chicken dip, [...]

It Was Beautiful and Now It is Gone…

I heard a very slick remix of the love theme from The Godfather today on WPGC just after 4:30. It was very chill, down-tempo with just a little hint of hip hop (not industrial) drums and bass. It was part of Big Tigger’s afternoon mix so naturally I can’t find it anywhere. There are lots [...]

I don’t really care if people smoke or not, but it does irritate me to come home after a night out and have to throw my clothes outside or start a load of laundry immediately to prevent the house from smelling like stale cigarette smoke. Not to the point of not going out, but enough [...]

It’s been over ten years since I first heard Third Eye Blind on the side stage of HFStival 1997. Yesterday I had the opportunity to do so again at UMD College Park’s Ritchie Coliseum, this time while working on the show providing support to the Technical Director. As usual, I got a kick out of [...]

I was reading Maxim and saw that you can buy an Airbus that seats 900+ passengers for the low hundreds of millions of dollars. Talking to a buddy in the production services industry (read: a company that provides big ass speakers for concerts, among other things), we thought it would be cool to have a [...]

Different Sorts of Recipes

Went down to a beach on the Magothy River to do some slacklining on Saturday afternoon. I setup a 30 foot line between two trees with a blanket below the center point but lacked the coordination to stay up for any period of time. I set up another line between two trees about 15 feet [...]

Musical Inspiration for a Rainy Night

I wasn’t able to find anything good on the radio while driving home in the rain tonight. Somehow I got thinking about quirky songs and a few lines popped into my head. Lines from songs that I don’t have ripped to MP3 at home, unfortunately. Songs that I might occasionally get to hear on the [...]

If you’ve never been to Seacrets in Ocean City, know the following. It is big. Three bars in the concert hall alone. Two outside. At least one more by the small stage. That doesn’t count the restaurant. Instead of wood, concrete, vinyl or stone floor in the concert hall, they’ve got diamond plate. They’ve got [...]
