Crushing a Router with Torrent Traffic

I’ve been pulling down some legal Nine Inch Nails media via torrent and it appears that the Actiontec router that Verizon provides isn’t quite up to the task.
I remotely monitor the response times and lately I’ve been getting all sorts of alerts that corresponds to my download periods.

Verizon Hikes FiOS Rates by Six Percent

I just got an “important notice” in the mail from Verizon.
We will be upgrading your FiOS Internet speed to up to 10/2 Mbps in the next few months.

Did you think I wouldn’t notice that you jacked up my rate an extra $13.60 from this month to last? What is so special about July that my Internet access is worth 34% more than June?
