I’ve been borrowing a lot of movies lately. One of them has shiny things, old-school computers, horrendously trendy but period synthesized music, Paul Reubens, a 21-year old Sarah Jessica Parker, and a child lead who hasn’t been seen in years. The dubbing is fair, but it’s a classic. Flight of the Navigator embodies a kind [...]

Having just finished watching Donnie Darko for the first time (several years late), my initial reaction is simple.
Wow.
This is one of those films that just levels you. I like to think I have an imagination and a head full of ideas, but I just don’t know how someone could sit down and write something like [...]
The truth — if there is one — is out there, but we may not be able to see it. Or if we can see bits of it, we may not be able to comprehend. That’s how I feel about Edmond.
William H. Macy plays well as the confused and shaken protagonist; I imagine it would [...]
Last Saturday night I saw Knowing. That movie with Nicholas Cage, the kid, and the numbers of all the disasters? The concept sounded cool. I wanted to know where they would take it. Visually, it’s stunning. The effects — especially the disasters — are top-notch. The movie is a lot more suspenseful than I expected, [...]
Inside the Actors Studio
Posted in film, television on Apr 3rd, 2009
There’s something really neat about Inside the Actors Studio. That’s what I think every time I see it. I don’t feel compelled to watch it, but I enjoy it when I happen to catch it on. Host James Lipton sticks to the script in most cases, not letting the guests wander too far. I feel [...]
I Miss VHS
Posted in advertising, complaints, technology on Jan 29th, 2009
For all of its flaws and with all of the advances of DVD, I think VHS had a few notable benefits. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t miss futzing around with the tracking on an old tape. Or fishing the magnetic tape out of the VCR once it got frayed and ruined. What I miss [...]
I caught Quantum of Solace last night. It’s a Bond movie, so there isn’t much I could say that would spoil the plot. You’ve got the same formulaic action, shooting, stunts, fights, deaths, and spy stuff as the other installments taking place over land, air, and sea across numerous continents.
My opinion closely mirrors Snay’s, so [...]
Some Brief Words on Eagle Eye
Posted in film on Sep 27th, 2008
The plan was to see Righteous Kill with the lads last night. I’ve been looking forward to seeing DeNiro and Pacino together again on the screen for the first time since Heat. But it wasn’t to be, the 7:20 time that we were planning on came and went while we were busy bantering about current [...]
After a long wait the director, writer, and star of The Family That Preys informed us in person — after a lot of applause, as if he were a local boy — that we were the first group to see the film. Very unexpected, but cool.
“I like to start things on time,” he said, explaining [...]
Pineapple Express is Mad Dope
Posted in complaints, film on Jul 24th, 2008
I received an invitation to an advance screening of Pineapple Express last night. The movie opens officially on August 6th, so how could I resist? The screening was held in The Charles Theatre’s largest theater, complete with MIB-sized ventilation air ducts. I don’t know why I noticed them, but I like the way they look.
News [...]
Been waiting for The Dark Knight since you heard about it? Curious to see Heath Ledger’s final performance? Have a thing for Christian Bale? Maggie Gyllenhaal? Michael Caine? Hmm, or maybe you’re a Marvel DC comics fan?
How about a few rounds beforehand?
Call it a happy hour or pre-gaming if you like, but a few of [...]
No picture today, just a lot that’s been in the back of my mind lately.
I’ve been going to the gym again. It was one of those things I kept putting off (for close to six months) so I feel pretty good about it. I’m only going twice a week, but I feel healthier. I’d been [...]
I saw WALL-E last Friday night and loved it. I can’t remember the last time I saw a movie with a G rating in the theater, let alone enjoyed it this much. Sometimes I see a movie and think I’ll have to pick that up on DVD because I know I’ll want to see it [...]
Hulu.com is Nifty

Why pay $1 for Red Box when you can stream movies for free on Hulu? Sure it isn’t as good a selection at Blockbuster or Red Box and the quality isn’t the same as a DVD, but you can’t beat the price. The best part is that it’s legit. NBC Universal and News Corp. teamed [...]
Doogie Howser Movie
Posted in film, television, things i'd like to see on Jun 10th, 2008
Why hasn’t Doogie Howser, M.D. been made into a movie yet? With all of the other television shows that the studios have been making these days instead of coming up with new material, why not? It could be dubbed “The Later Years” (paying homage to Fred Savage) and depict Dr. Howser handling a few cases [...]
