The Family That Preys

After a long wait the director, writer, and star of The Family That Preys informed us in person — after a lot of applause, as if he were a local boy — that we were the first group to see the film. Very unexpected, but cool.
“I like to start things on time,” he said, explaining [...]

Don’t Know Tavern

I went to Don’t Know Tavern on Friday night. It’s owned by the same people as No Idea Tavern, apparently both named as if to answer the question “so where are/were you?” I don’t know if I’d call it “in celebration,” but it was for ACW’s final fling happy hour before he quits blogging forever. [...]

Pineapple Express is Mad Dope

I received an invitation to an advance screening of Pineapple Express last night. The movie opens officially on August 6th, so how could I resist? The screening was held in The Charles Theatre’s largest theater, complete with MIB-sized ventilation air ducts. I don’t know why I noticed them, but I like the way they look.
News [...]

WALL-E

I saw WALL-E last Friday night and loved it. I can’t remember the last time I saw a movie with a G rating in the theater, let alone enjoyed it this much. Sometimes I see a movie and think I’ll have to pick that up on DVD because I know I’ll want to see it [...]

Try the Carne Adovada at Golden West Cafe

I’ve wanted to eat at Golden West Cafe for a while now and on Sunday I had the opportunity to go. The food was excellent and the ambiance appealing. In short, I really enjoyed it.
There’s more.
I’ve been told that service was often lackadaisical by more than one person, but I didn’t have any complaints. We [...]

Cafe Hon, Better Than Expected

The reputation of Cafe Hon precedes it. I’ve read good reviews and bad, both by local bloggers and by food critics. Some people like the tacky decorations and the large-haired ladies working the front counter that is the original from the hardware store that used to occupy the space. The word “kitschy” is most used [...]

Sunday Brunch at Little Havana

To make it really short, the Sunday brunch at Little Havana is a blast. Beware however, without a reservation you can expect up to a two hour wait (especially if its a holiday weekend). As far as reservations go, make them early. If the weather is supposed to be nice, ask for an outside table. [...]

Matthew’s Pizza Doesn’t Disappoint

I wasn’t born when Matthew’s Pizza opened their doors back in 1943. Neither were my parents, for that matter. Nevertheless, I was told that Matthew’s Pizza is revered by Baltimore residents and critics alike and that I had to give it a shot.
When it comes to local pizza shops, I don’t need to be told [...]

Some Eclectic Entertainment

Over the past week or so I’ve watched a handful of movies. The most recent released in 2007, the earliest in 1968. In 39 years there’s been some wild advances but that isn’t to say that the older stuff isn’t excellent.
I remember seeing previews for The Kingdom and thinking I’ll definitely check that out. Now [...]

Pizza Time Delivers

It was a dark and rainy night. It was Friday. I was hungry. That means pizza. I don’t usually care for Pizza Hut, but the Ultimate Grill pizza in the ad was looking pretty good. Then I saw that there were delivery charges**, so I nixed that. I’ve had good luck with Pizza Boli’s in [...]

Remembering the Past at East West Bistro

My family and I went to East West Bistro in Pasadena for Mother’s Day brunch yesterday. When I called to make the reservation last Tuesday I was asked whether I was planning on the brunch or the full menu. I didn’t know if it would be an Asian-style breakfast buffet or a mixture of Americanized [...]

The Dog Pub, Columbia Edition

The Dog Pub — formerly the Thirsty Dog — just opened a second location in Columbia in September. Just around the traffic circle from Nottingham’s, The Dog Pub is open from 11am-2am daily. If a trip to Federal Hill isn’t in the cards or if you’re in one of the surrounding business parks and need [...]

Avoid Lunch at Fortune House

I’ve found that lunch specials at most Chinese restaurants offer over sized meals, generally offering a lot of good food for your money. An entree, white/friend fried, soup and occasionally an egg roll for less than $5. That being said: Fortune House in Annapolis offered a watered down version of that which left me disappointed.
When [...]

Located a short block from Annapolis City Dock, Maria’s Sicilian Ristorante serves up amazing Sicilian dishes. A rich menu, impressive service, and elegant surroundings make Maria’s perfect for evening out on the town.
I’ll be the first to admit that I’m no gourmet. Just as the United States is advertised as the “melting pot,” Italian dining [...]

Ollie’s Trolley

Two blocks west of the FBI headquarters building and two blocks east of the White House, a small hamburger joint is dwarfed by its monstrous surroundings, but only in stature. These folks serve up 100% beef burgers at a very reasonable cost no matter where you’re from, let alone one of Washington, D.C.’s prime tourist [...]
